4. Cape Coast Castle, main gate and clock tower
It is likely that Hendrik Muller visited Cape Coast after he visited Elmina. Cape Coast is the former British Capital of the Gold Coast, situated circa 15 kilometres east of Elmina. All photo's of Cape Coast show views of the town and were most likely bought by him.
Cape Coast Castle was headquarters of the British government in the Gold Coast from 1652 to 1875. In the latter year, the seat of government was transferred to Accra (still the capital of Ghana) and the castle lost its function. On the photo, the building is in a bad state of maintenance, showing from the complete lack of whitewash on the walls. Today the castle is a museum and the regional offices of the Ghana Museums and Monument Board.
